Bhubaneswar, December 5: The Odisha Government may consider to develop and upgrade the Barabati Stadium after due examination of feasibility and other statutory aspects. This was informed by Suryabanshi Suraj on Friday in a written reply the Odisha Assembly on Friday.
Responding to a query of Barabati-Cuttack MLA Sofia Firdous that whether there is any proposal or DPR to upgrade Barabati into a world-class international cricket venue with improved seating, player facilities, floodlights and access, the Minister informed that “it may be considered after due examination of feasibility and other statutory aspects”.
The Congress MLA specifically wanted to know whether the Government has taken note of the huge public craze for cricket at Barabati Stadium and the recent match attended the Chief Minister and Ministers and whether there was any proposal or DPR to upgrade Barabati into a world-class international cricket venue with improved seating, player facilities, floodlights and access.
In response the Minister informed that, “Cricket is a popular sport in the country and in the State of Odisha. The Government in Sports and Youth Services is aware of the popularity of cricket matches in Barabati Stadium, Cuttack.”
“The Government may consider to develop and upgrade the Barabati stadium after due examination of feasibility and other statutory aspects,” the Minister told the House.
The Barabati Stadium, an icon of Cuttack, was built in 1952. Currently, the has a seating capacity of 42,000. Many structures in Barabati Stadium are reportedly in a dilapidated condition.
