West Bengal Records 78.68% Voter Turnout by 3:30 PM in Phase 2 of Assembly Polls

New Delhi, April 29: West Bengal recorded a robust 78.68% voter turnout by 3:30 PM on Wednesday in the second phase of polling for the state's assembly elections. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Purba Bardhaman district led with the highest voter turnout at 83.11%, while Hooghly followed closely at 80.77%.

Other regions also showed significant voter engagement, with Nadia district recording a turnout of 79.79%. Kolkata North and South reported 78% and 75.38%, respectively. South 24 Parganas saw a noteworthy 76.75% turnout, underscoring the widespread enthusiasm across the state.

The second phase of polling is seen as a crucial test for the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), as it covers 142 out of the 294 seats in West Bengal, primarily in the strongholds of South Bengal and Kolkata. This phase is considered a litmus test for the TMC, as the party aims to retain its dominance in these areas.

A total electorate of around 3.21 crore is participating in this phase, which includes 1,64,35,627 men, 1,57,37,418 women, and 792 transgender voters. The election features 1,448 candidates, including 220 women, contesting across 41,001 polling stations, with over 8,000 of those managed entirely by women.

While 142 seats are up for grabs, all eyes are particularly on the 'Big Five' urban constituencies. Bhabanipur, a high-stakes seat, is drawing significant attention, along with Tollygunge, which is at the heart of Bengal's film industry. During the 2021 elections, the TMC had an overwhelming victory in this belt, securing 123 of the 142 seats.

For the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), this phase is an opportunity to make significant inroads into the urban "bhadralok" vote and appeal to the Matua community. On the other hand, the TMC is focused on securing a fourth consecutive term for Mamata Banerjee by maintaining its stronghold.

The final vote count will take place on May 4, with the results expected to provide key insights into the trajectory of the ongoing election battle.Bottom of Form
