Kolkata, Aug 18: The West Bengal government has introduced several new measures aimed at enhancing the safety of women in workplaces, with a particular focus on state-run hospitals, where women often work night shifts.
These measures include the provision of designated retiring rooms and the establishment of CCTV-monitored 'safe zones'.
Alapan Bandyopadhyay, Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, announced these initiatives during a press conference on Saturday. The announcement comes in the wake of ongoing protests by doctors across the state, following the tragic incident of an alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
In addition to hospitals and medical colleges, the new safety measures will also extend to hostels and other facilities where women work night shifts. These establishments will now be included in a flagship program called 'Rattirer Sathi – Helpers of the Night', which will be supported by volunteers to ensure the safety of women during late hours.
