Swiss town transforms into fortress for annual global summit

Davos: The picturesque Alpine town of Davos has transformed into a high-security fortress as the World Economic Forum 2026 officially kicks off this week. Visitors arriving by train on Monday were met with a stark visual reminder of the event's significance: Swiss Army anti-aircraft cannons positioned against the snowy landscape.

As global leaders and business executives descend on Switzerland, security protocols have reached their peak. Near Davos Lake, 35-millimetre twin anti-aircraft guns, which have been in service since the 1960s, stand guard. These weapons serve as a clear signal that the safety of the world's most powerful delegates is the top priority.

The main street, known as the Promenade, has undergone a complete makeover. Regular shops, hotels, and even churches have been rented out and rebranded by nations and massive corporations. One of the most visible takeovers this year comes from Saudi Arabia. The Gulf nation has repurposed a large supermarket building next to the Congress Centre, turning it into a lavish exhibition space.

India continues to assert its growing global influence with one of the most significant presences on the Promenade. Pavilions representing Indian business interests and government initiatives are prominent along the main strip, showcasing the country's economic roadmap to the international community.

Meanwhile, the United States has secured the local English Church for its events. This year, the US focus is on celebrating the country's 250th anniversary with themes revolving around freedom, space exploration, and artificial intelligence.

Despite the heavy military presence, the atmosphere remained largely calm on Sunday. Tourists and locals mingled with security personnel under bright winter sunshine. However, the tension is palpable; a minor incident involving a false fire alarm at a hotel briefly saw emergency vehicles rushing through the streets, highlighting the high state of alert.

Ukraine is also present, utilizing its platform to remind attendees of the ongoing realities of the conflict with Russia. As the summit begins, the town is balancing its identity as a quiet ski resort with its role as the center of global geopolitics.
