Vadodara (Gujarat), July 9: At least three people were killed and several others are feared missing after a portion of the Gambhira Bridge over Mahisagar River in Gujarat’s Vadodara district collapsed this morning.
The collapse caused at least four vehicles, including two trucks and two vans, on the bridge to plunge into the river.
As per reports, the incident occurred at around 7:30 am along a state highway when the 45-year-old Gambhira Bridge, which connected Padra in Vadodara district to Anand district, collapsed. It had long been in a state of disrepair.
Authorities have confirmed that three people have died in the mishap and around 10 individuals have been rescued alive> Meanwhile, reports suggest that five to six vehicles fell into the river when the bridge gave way.
Rescue operations are still underway as officials search for any remaining victims.
Residents have blamed the administration for the disaster, claiming that their repeated requests to repair the decades-old bridge were ignored. Locals allege that despite multiple warnings, authorities failed to act, ultimately leading to the bridge's collapse and the resulting casualties.
The Gambhira Bridge, a crucial link between Vadodara and Anand, had visibly deteriorated over the years and was no longer suitable for heavy traffic, according to residents.
