Sophie Devine defends seven runs in final over drama

Cricket fans witnessed an absolute thriller at the DY Patil Stadium as the Gujarat Giants snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat against the Delhi Capitals. In a match that swung like a pendulum, theGujarat Giants vs Delhi Capitalsencounter ended with a narrow four-run win for the Giants, propelling them to the top of the WPL 2026 table.

The Final Over Drama

Delhi Capitals seemed destined for a win, needing just seven runs from the final six balls. They had fought hard to chase down a massive target of 210. However, Sophie Devine, who had already starred with the bat, took the ball for the final over. In a display of calm under pressure, she removed set batters Jemimah Rodrigues and Laura Wolvaardt, conceding only two runs to seal the game.

Devine Power and a Run-Fest

Earlier in the day, Gujarat Giants posted a commanding total of 209. The star of the show was undoubtedly Sophie Devine. She blasted a belligerent 95 off just 42 balls. Her innings was filled with brute force, including an over where she smashed Sneh Rana for 32 runs—the most expensive over in WPL history. Ashleigh Gardner also chipped in with a quickfire 49 to boost the score.

Nandani’s Hattrick in Vain

Despite the loss, it was a memorable day for Delhi's fast bowler Nandani Sharma. She claimed a sensational hat-trick in the final over of the first innings, becoming the first uncapped player in WPL to do so. Her efforts, along with a five-wicket haul, helped restrict the Giants from posting an even larger total.

DC’s Fighting Chase

Delhi Capitals replied with determination. Lizelle Lee scored a rapid 86, and Laura Wolvaardt contributed 77 runs, nearly pulling off the highest chase in tournament history. They recovered well from a slow start and punished the bowlers, but eventually fell agonizingly short by four runs. This result marks the second consecutive win for Gujarat and a second straight loss for Delhi.
