Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, February 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his two-day visit to Malaysia, announced the opening of a new Indian consulate in the country, further strengthening the ties between India and Malaysia. He also celebrated the Union government's landmark decision to extend the eligibility for the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card to Malaysian citizens of Indian origin, up to the sixth generation.

In a heartfelt address to the Indian diaspora at a community event in Kuala Lumpur, PM Modi shared, "India will always welcome you with open arms. That’s why we made a historic decision recently, extending OCI card eligibility to Malaysian citizens of Indian origin up to the 6th generation."

The Prime Minister also introduced the Thiruvalluvar Scholarships, which will enable Malaysian students to pursue studies in India. "We have been supporting the Indian Scholarships Trust Fund, and now we are launching the Thiruvalluvar Scholarships for students to study in India. We also look forward to your participation in the Know India Program," he said.

Furthermore, PM Modi emphasized the imminent opening of a new Indian consulate in Malaysia, describing it as a step that will bring the two nations even closer. "This new consulate will enhance our relationship," he added.

During his visit, PM Modi also toured a special exhibition highlighting the history and contributions of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia. The Person of Indian Origin (PIO) History and Heritage Exhibition showcased the resilience and enduring legacy of the Indian community in Malaysia across generations. The Prime Minister lauded the efforts of the Indian community in organizing the exhibition, calling it an inspiring tribute to their heritage.

"This community event in Kuala Lumpur, including the exhibition on the Indian community's contributions, reflects the deep bond between our nations. The extension of OCI card eligibility and the upcoming consulate are clear symbols of our shared history and the strength of our people-to-people ties," PM Modi said in a post on X.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) echoed the sentiment, describing the historical ties between India and Malaysia as the foundation of their enduring partnership.
