Bhubaneswar, May 27: Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal on Tuesday met Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Lok Seva Bhawan to review the progress of Vedanta’s proposed projects in Odisha, involving investments worth over Rs 1 lakh crore.
The meeting focused on the timely implementation of Vedanta’s upcoming industrial projects in the state. With investments exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore, Vedanta has emerged as one of the largest investors in Odisha.
The company’s proposed projects include a 60 lakh tonne alumina refinery in Rayagada, a 30 lakh tonne aluminium smelter and a 6000 MW power project in Dhenkanal, along with a downstream aluminium park and integrated coal and bauxite operations.
According to officials, the projects are expected to strengthen Odisha’s industrial ecosystem and position the state as a major global aluminium production hub. The downstream aluminium park, proposed near the smelter unit, will manufacture advanced aluminium products for sectors such as aerospace, electric vehicles and defence. The initiatives are also expected to generate large-scale employment opportunities and promote the growth of MSMEs across the state.
Land allocation for the power project and smelter in Dhenkanal, as well as the alumina refinery in Rayagada, has already been completed. Infrastructure development for the projects is progressing steadily. Vedanta’s new coal block is also expected to become operational this year, while the Ministry of Railways has approved a proposed rail link near the company’s upcoming bauxite mine.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the investment projects would create significant opportunities for the youth of Odisha. He said the state government would review the progress of Vedanta’s projects every 15 days to ensure timely commencement of work.
The Chief Minister further stated that the projects would play a crucial role in Odisha’s target of becoming a 500 billion dollar economy by 2036 and would accelerate economic growth and infrastructure development, particularly in central and southern parts of the state.
Reflecting on the progress of the projects, Anil Agarwal said Vedanta’s upcoming ventures would bring transformative changes to Odisha’s economy by creating jobs, strengthening local enterprises and building a future-ready industrial base. He also thanked the Odisha government for its support and reiterated Vedanta’s commitment to contributing to the state’s growth.
The meeting was attended by senior state government officials, including Hemant Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries), Saswat Mishra, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister, Dr. Arabinda Padhee, Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue), along with senior officials from Vedanta Group.
