PM Modi pledges continued support for dignity and inclusive growth

On the significant occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has renewed the nation’s pledge to uphold the dignity and rights of the Divyang community. Addressing the nation via social media on Wednesday, the Prime Minister emphasized that ensuring accessibility and equal opportunities remains a top priority for the government.

In a heartfelt message shared on platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi acknowledged the immense talent and resilience of Divyang citizens. He noted that individuals with disabilities have carved out a niche for themselves in a variety of sectors, driving the country’s growth through their sheer determination and creativity. He stated that their contributions have been instrumental in enriching India's developmental journey.

Reflecting on the government's track record, the Prime Minister highlighted the strides made in recent years regarding Divyangjan empowerment in India. He pointed to the implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in 2016, along with significant improvements in inclusive education and accessible infrastructure. The Prime Minister assured citizens that the push for innovations in assistive technology and welfare policies would continue with vigor in the years ahead.

Global Context and Social Responsibility

Observed globally on December 3, this day focuses on integrating persons with disabilities into the mainstream of political, social, economic, and cultural life. The United Nations has set the theme for this year as "Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress," a goal that aligns with India's domestic agenda.

Judiciary Steps Up for Awareness

While the executive branch focuses on policy, the judiciary has also taken proactive steps to foster sensitivity. In a related development prior to the designated day, the Supreme Court of India issued a unique directive to popular culture figures. On November 27, the apex court directed comedian Samay Raina and others to utilize their massive platforms for a noble cause.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant suggested that these influencers invite successful, specially-abled individuals to their shows. The objective is to raise funds for medical treatments and shift societal perceptions. The court termed this a "social burden" rather than a penal one, urging those with public influence to share their spotlight to aid the cause of inclusivity.

As India observes this day, the message from both the government and the judiciary is clear: building an inclusive nation requires collective effort, from legal frameworks to changes in cultural attitudes.
