Utkal Divas: A glimpse of Odisha’s rich culture in Jamshedpur

Bhubaneswar/ Jamshedpur, Ap 1: In the air of the Steel City today, one can feel the earthy aroma of Odisha and hear the echo of unwavering devotion to Lord Jagannath. On the momentous occasion of April 1st, also known as ‘Utkal Divas,’ the Odia community of Jamshedpur stands united, committed to passing on their rich cultural heritage to the younger generation.

For the approximately 500,000 Odia-speaking people in East Singhbhum district and 150,000 in Jamshedpur, this day is more than a mere celebration; it is a grand homecoming, a moment to reconnect with their roots.

The Odia community’s contribution to the development of Jamshedpur is immeasurable. The five major institutions-Utkal Association in Sakchi, Utkal Samaj in Golmuri, Utkal Bandhab Samiti in Shastrinagar, Utkal Sammelani, and Odia Ganda Samaj-have continually strived to preserve and promote the Odia language and traditions. With the support of the Odisha government, these organizations have facilitated the arrival of Odia literature, books, and cultural performances in Jamshedpur.

But the contribution of the Odia community goes beyond just cultural events. Pradeep Jena, General Secretary of the Utkal Samaj in Golmuri, explains that their primary aim is to educate and empower the community. They offer free training programs, including spoken English and computer education for children, and regularly organize free medical camps while supporting economically deprived yet meritorious students.

On the literary front, Jamshedpur’s Odia community has made its distinctive mark. Writer and journalist Badal Bhuyan has been editing the Singhbhum Patrika since 1993, bridging the literary world of Delhi, Bhubaneswar, and Jamshedpur.

Under the leadership of Tarun Kumar Mohanty, General Secretary of Sakchi Utkal Association, women have been given a powerful platform to practice and celebrate Odia traditions, contributing to the growing influence of women’s empowerment within the community.

The spiritual landscape of Jamshedpur is also deeply enriched by the Odia community’s practices. Durga Puja and Ashtaprahara Sankirtan in areas like Telco, Barmamines, Mango, and Tuiladungri have added a unique spiritual flavor to the city, blending cultural traditions with religious devotion.

This evening, various locations across the city will witness vibrant celebrations of Odia pride:

Utkal Association, Sakchi: Cultural and award ceremony starting at 7:00 PM.

Utkal Samaj, Golmuri: A fusion of music and art beginning at 7:30 PM.

Utkal Bandhab Samiti, Shastrinagar: Special cultural evening from 7:00 PM.

Through these events, the Odia community in Jamshedpur sends a powerful message that even though geographically distant from Odisha, their hearts continue to beat in sync with the waves of the Mahanadi River and the land of Utkal.
