Washington, DC [US], June 22: In the aftermath of targeted U.S. strikes on three of Iran's major nuclear facilities, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that Tehran’s nuclear aspirations had been “obliterated” under Operation Midnight Hammer. He credited the success to the decisive leadership of President Donald Trump, calling the operation a demonstration of renewed American deterrence.
Speaking at a Pentagon press briefing on Sunday, Hegseth highlighted President Trump’s long-standing stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. “For more than a decade, President Trump has been unwavering in his message: Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon. Full stop,” he said.
“Thanks to President Trump’s bold and visionary leadership, and his steadfast commitment to peace through strength, Iran’s nuclear ambitions are no more,” Hegseth stated. He emphasized that while many past leaders aspired to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program, it was Trump who ultimately delivered the decisive blow.
Describing the operation as both “bold and brilliant,” Hegseth asserted that it marked a turning point for global security and reaffirmed America’s military dominance. “This shows the world that American deterrence is back,” he noted. “When this President speaks, the world listens. And our military backs him up.”
He further added, “The United States Armed Forces remain the most powerful military force the world has ever seen. No other country could have executed such an operation, not even close.”
Hegseth also underlined Trump's preference for diplomatic solutions, stating, “When President Trump says he’s giving 60 days for peace and negotiation, he means it. But beyond that, if the threat persists, that nuclear capability will cease to exist.”
“This is not the previous administration,” Hegseth said. “President Trump means no nukes. He wants peace — and Iran should take that path.”
Earlier in the day, President Trump confirmed the success of the strikes, which targeted Iran’s underground nuclear sites at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan.
