Bhubaneswar, July 25: Pandemonium prevailed in the Odisha Assembly on the fourth day today after the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress created a ruckus in the House over the Polavaram project issue.

During the zero hour of the House proceedings, the opposition parties raised the contentious Polavaram project issue, which led to a commotion in the Assembly prompting Speaker Surama Padhy adjourning the House till 4 pm.

Expressing displeasure with the central government’s decision to fund Andhra Pradesh for the Polavaram project, Congress MLA Rama Chandra Kadam alleged that the project would result in flooding in several areas of southern Odisha.

Following this, Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati demanded the formation of a House Committee to address the Polavaram issue.

The Congress members then created a commotion in the House, insisting that the Speaker take action on their demand.

Supporting Kadam, MLA Tara Bahinipati allegedly pulled the Speaker’s microphone, resulting in a brief adjournment of the House.

Initially, the House was adjourned for 15 minutes, and was later extended until 4 pm.

On the other hand, a confrontation occurred between BJD MLA Arun Sahoo and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling during the zero hour over the rules and procedures of the Legislative Assembly and Parliament.

"During the Governor's address, Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik interrupted. However, during the discussion on the vote of thanks for the Governor's address, some comments were made about the opposition leader, On July 23, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling had stated that the Leader of Opposition should be 'arrested',” said Arun Sahoo while addressing the media.

He also demanded that the statement be expunged from the proceedings and Minister Mukesh Mahaling tender an apology. "If the govrrnment has guts, it may arrest Leader of Opposition, Naveen Patnaik", he said.

In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling countered, "I did not use any unconstitutional words. I did not say anything that would disrespect the opposition leader. I had no ill intentions. "

He also mentioned that during the BJD government's tenure, former opposition leader Jayanarayan Mishra was referred to as 'mad' and comments were made to send him to Ranchi.
