UP bus falls off Nepal gorge into river: 27 killed

Kathmandu, Aug 23: At least 27 people were killed and 29 had a close shave after an Uttar Pradesh (UP) bus plunged into the Marsyangdi River in central Nepal on Friday following a tremendous landslide. 

The bus from Gorakhpur was heading toward the capital Kathmandu from Pokhara Town when it drove off the highway in Aaina Pahara in the Tanahun district.

The tragic incident took place while the bus was heading to Gorakhpur from Pokhara via the Kathmandu City, said sources.

At least 14 people were confirmed dead in the accident so far while rescue operation is underway, the report said.

On being informed, a team of 45 Armed Police Force personnel led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Madhav Paudel from the Armed Police Force Nepal Disaster Management Training School rushed to the spot and initiated the rescue operation.

About 35 APF personnel from no 23 Battalion, Bhanu, Tanahun, later joined the rescue operation, the report added.
