Bihar, July 11: Following recent bridge collapses in Bihar, an ongoing inspection of bridges across Uttar Pradesh has uncovered alarming findings: 83 bridges in the state are deemed ‘unfit to commute’, according to government officials.
The audit, covering more than 700 bridges in 41 districts, has identified critical issues requiring immediate rectification. Measures include complete closure for commuters or restrictions on heavy vehicle traffic. Notably, two such bridges are located in the state capital, Lucknow.
Brijesh Singh, Minister of State for the Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD), emphasized, “Monitoring and repairing bridges is an ongoing process for our department. We have pinpointed those needing urgent repairs and those that must be closed off entirely.”
In Lucknow, the Pucca Pul over the Gomti river in Chowk and another bridge over the Sai river in Mohanlalganj have been closed to heavy vehicles due to safety concerns.
Experts stress the importance of regular monitoring and swift action to prevent bridge failures. Salil Yadav, retired chief engineer (bridge) of the PWD, highlighted challenges in securing repair funds when estimates exceed Rs 40 lakh, complicating approvals.
The 83 unfit bridges span 41 districts, with Kanpur Dehat and Saharanpur among the most affected. In response, diversions have been implemented in several districts to mitigate risks posed by weak bridge pillars.
Inspections have focused on critical components such as pillars, bridge girders, expansion joints, pier caps, and wing walls. Decision-making regarding traffic restrictions or diversions has been decentralized to local levels.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed officials to prioritize inspections of all bridges over 50 years old. The PWD is now soliciting proposals from district offices for repairs or new constructions, with a comprehensive report expected next week.
Meanwhile, Lucknow’s iconic Pucca Pul, built in 1914 to replace the historic Shahi Pul, faces restrictions amid concerns over its structural integrity. Originally constructed by British authorities, the bridge has served as a vital city artery but is now restricted to lighter traffic only.
Historian Roshan Taqi noted, “The decision to restrict heavy vehicles on Pucca Pul follows expert advice, balancing preservation of its historic legacy with modern traffic demands.”
In 2022, a thorough inspection by the Bridge Corporation confirmed safety concerns, prompting the recent traffic restrictions aimed at safeguarding this historic landmark.
