It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression by October 22 morning and into a cyclonic storm by October 23, 2024 over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal. Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards and reach northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coasts by 24th October morning.

The cyclone is likely to be named Dana, a name given by Qatar.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday confirmed that a cyclonic storm is likely to form around October 23.

As per a release by the SRC office, yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over central Andaman Sea lay over North Andaman Sea and persisted over the same region in the forenoon (0830 hrs IST) today. Thus, a cyclone system is apparently predicted due to the intensified weather conditions after the withdrawal of the monsoon.

As per the preliminary forecast, the possible cyclone is likely to become a severe cyclonic storm, but not into a Super Cyclone. The wind speed is likely to be around 100 to 120 kmph which will cause heavy rain in Odisha on October 24 and October 25 with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall as well. More clarity likely to emerge on its impact and intensity after the formation of low pressure and depression, says IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
