Gajapati, Oct 30: Heavy rainfall brought on by the remnants of Cyclone Montha has caused landslides that have disrupted road communication to four villages along the ghat road near Balibada village in Odisha’s Gajapati district. The landslides, which occurred on Thursday, saw portions of hills collapse, sending soil and mud sliding onto the road and blocking transportation routes.

According to reports, the landslides were triggered by the persistent rainfall that has weakened the hillside slopes in the area. The continuous downpour has led to repeated mudslides, heightening concerns and anxiety among residents of the affected areas.

Villagers have also raised concerns about the safety of the hillside routes, with many expressing frustration over the lack of permanent solutions to prevent such disasters.

In response to the situation, local administration officials, along with the village Sarpanch, visited the site to oversee the clearing operations. A JCB machine was deployed to remove the debris and restore access to the affected areas.

With continuous rainfall affecting Gajapati and nearby regions, authorities have raised concerns about the potential for further landslides. Local officials are urging residents in hilly areas to remain cautious and stay alert as the weather conditions continue to be unstable.

Sources from the region indicated that additional measures are being explored to reinforce vulnerable slopes and reduce the risk of future incidents. Meanwhile, locals are hopeful that the ongoing efforts will bring some relief and ensure their safety during this challenging time.
