Koraput, Sept 28: UNICEF, in collaboration with the National Health Mission (NHM) and the Government of Odisha, organized a high-impact roundtable in Koraput aimed at addressing malnutrition in the region. The discussion focused on tackling Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and highlighted the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration and media involvement in raising awareness.
The event began with a welcome address from Mamata Mohanty, DPM-NOP, who underscored the urgent need to combat malnutrition in Koraput, one of Odisha's most affected districts. Mohanty presented the Broad Strokes of Activities for SAM Management, detailing ongoing efforts and future plans. “The grassroots involvement of Anganwadi centers and local organizations is crucial for effective nutrition solutions in Koraput. Our aim is to strengthen these networks to ensure nutrition interventions reach every corner of the district,” she emphasized.
Sourav Bhattacharjee, UNICEF’s Nutrition Specialist, led a session on the Overview of Malnutrition and the Importance of SAM Management. He stated, “Over 43% of children in Koraput are stunted, and 16% suffer from wasting. We must prioritize SAM management to save lives and promote healthier futures for our children. Effective SAM management encompasses not just food, but also integrated approaches involving health, sanitation, and education. It is vital for children's overall well-being and cognitive development.”
The roundtable also included an Open Discussion and Q&A session, allowing participants to share insights and address the challenges and solutions regarding malnutrition in the region. This interactive engagement brought together policymakers, health experts, and media representatives.
It is worth noting that the National Nutrition Programme in Koraput, supported by UNICEF and the Government of Odisha, focuses on combating malnutrition in one of the state’s most vulnerable districts. Through community engagement and multi-sectoral collaboration, the program aims to reduce malnutrition rates and improve health outcomes for children and women.
The event concluded with closing remarks and a vote of thanks from Mamata Mohanty, who stated, “This roundtable has laid the groundwork for stronger partnerships and community-driven solutions. Together, we will build a healthier future for the children and mothers of Koraput.”
