Cuttack, June 23: A 45-year-old undertrial prisoner, identified as Naresh from Haryana, died at SCB Medical College and Hospital on Monday morning, reportedly due to the non-availability of an ICU bed.
Naresh, who had been arrested in connection with a theft case, was lodged at Berhampur Jail. Following a deterioration in his health, he was initially admitted to MKCG Medical College in Berhampur. Doctors later referred him to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, and subsequently, he was shifted to SCB Medical in Cuttack on Sunday.
Despite his critical condition, Naresh was allegedly not provided an ICU bed. According to his family, the lack of timely and adequate medical attention led to his death. They claim he passed away while lying on the floor of the New Medicine Ward.
The incident has raised serious concerns over the availability of emergency care facilities for critical patients, especially undertrials. Further investigation into the matter is awaited.
