Nepal, Sept 4: Two workers have been rescued alive from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project in Nepal, more than a week after flash flooding devastated the Nepal-Tibet border region and killed more than 1,200 people.
Dramatic footage showed rescuers pulling Sanjaya Saha and Kabir Maharjan from the tunnel during a major operation to reach workers still trapped underground.
At least 39 others are believed to remain inside the tunnel network. Authorities told that rescue teams heard voices early Friday, raising hopes that more survivors could be found.
Engineers have been pumping air into the tunnels as rescuers work to reach those trapped.
The flooding, which struck last Wednesday, is believed to have been triggered by a glacial collapse. Roads and buildings were destroyed, while thousands of people remain missing.
Both rescued workers were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. Nepal's Prime Minister's Office said Maharjan, who was rescued second, is in critical condition and is receiving treatment at an Army hospital.
Saha will also undergo medical examinations at the hospital.
The rescue of the two men has offered a rare moment of hope amid the widespread devastation and diminishing chances of finding survivors.
