Two poachers arrested in Similipal Tiger Reserve using AI surveillance technology

Mayurbhanj, Sept 11: In a significant victory against wildlife crime, the Forest Department in Mayurbhanj's Dhanchaturi area arrested two hunters caught on AI-powered surveillance cameras inside the core area of Similipal Tiger Reserve. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen monitoring and protect the sanctuary’s diverse wildlife.

Reports reveal that a group of eight hunters had entered the forests of the Podadiha Range within the reserve for illegal hunting activities. However, their movements were quickly detected by AI cameras strategically positioned throughout the area, which sent an immediate alert to forest officials.

Acting on the tip-off, the Forest Department launched a rapid raid in Dhanchaturi, successfully arresting two individuals: Mora Singh and Gobinda Soren. Authorities also seized two country-made guns, along with bows and arrows, which were allegedly used for hunting.

While two poachers were apprehended, six others managed to flee. Forest officials have since initiated a search operation to capture the remaining suspects and strengthen efforts to deter poaching in the region.

This incident underscores the increasing role of advanced technology, like AI surveillance cameras, in protecting wildlife and combating illegal hunting activities. Authorities have assured the public that operations will continue to safeguard the endangered species within the Similipal forests and ensure that poachers are held accountable.
