Indian athletes win double medals in Glasgow triple jump

Indian triple jumpers Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran secured double glory for their nation at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Saturday. Chithravel captured silver with a top leap of 16.58m. His teammate Thirumaran finished right behind him, recording 16.52m to grab bronze. Jamaican athlete Jordan Scott took home gold by clearing 16.72m. This double podium finish marks another major high point for Indian track and field athletes on the global stage.

Rise from Humble Roots

Both medallists grew up in farming families in Tamil Nadu and fought hard to reach international athletics. Chithravel trained under coach Indira Suresh in Chennai before moving to Nagercoil. He started his winning streak by taking first place at the 2018 Khelo India School Games. He then made history as India's first triple jump medallist at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. He later set a national indoor record of 16.98m at the 2023 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships. After jumping an impressive 17.37m national record and winning bronze at the Hangzhou Asian Games, he competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics. He also won silver medals at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships and FISU World University Games.

Selva Claims First Senior Medal

Saturday marked the first major senior international medal for Thirumaran, who hails from Madurai. He first gained global attention after winning silver at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Colombia. During that same year, he earned top honours at the Khelo India Youth Games. In 2023, he set an Indian U20 national record of 16.79m in Greece. The Asian Athletics Association named him the Best Asian Under-20 Male Athlete of the Year. Recently, while competing for Kansas State University, he logged a personal best of 17.05m and won the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in Oregon.
