Rayagada, August 8: A major railway accident was narrowly averted in the early hours of Thursday after a large rock fell onto the railway track near the Majhigariani Temple, on the outskirts of Rayagada town.
The incident occurred around midnight when the Visakhapatnam–Korba Link Express was approaching the affected section. Alerted by a loud noise, the train driver acted swiftly and applied the emergency brakes, bringing the train to a halt just in time. No casualties or damage to the train were reported.
Train movement on the route remained suspended from approximately 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM due to the obstruction. The Korba Express was stranded on the track for nearly five hours as a result.
Upon receiving the alert, railway rescue teams reached the site and worked to remove the debris and carry out necessary track repairs. Train operations resumed after the track was cleared, though services are currently operating on a single line as restoration work continues.
Officials from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have launched an investigation into the cause of the rockfall. Senior railway officers were present at the scene to oversee the clearance and safety measures.
Authorities confirmed that full operations will be restored once the affected section is deemed completely safe for passage.
