Berhampur, Aug 14: A traffic police personnel was allegedly abused and assaulted, while a woman traffic constable was reportedly slapped when she intervened during a road restriction-related dispute in Berhampur on Thursday afternoon.

According to reports, vehicular movement from Bishal Chhak towards Gate Bazaar has been restricted due to the ongoing construction of the Gate Bazaar overbridge. Around 4 pm, a car allegedly attempted to enter the restricted stretch. A traffic constable deployed at the spot stopped the vehicle.

One of the youths reportedly got out of the car and claimed to be an employee associated with the flyover construction work. However, security personnel at the site allegedly said they did not recognise him.

When the traffic personnel asked the driver to take another route, the youth reportedly claimed to be an office-bearer of a national political party. Despite being requested to follow the traffic restrictions, he allegedly pushed and punched the traffic constable.

A woman traffic constable who approached the spot to intervene was also allegedly slapped by the youth. The confrontation reportedly continued for around 10 minutes, with the incident being captured on video. The video has since gone viral on social media.

Following the incident, the woman traffic constable lodged a complaint at Town Police Station. Police have detained the two youths, including the driver, for questioning.

Traffic Police Station officer Ram Subramanyam Pradhan said a case has been registered based on the complaint and an investigation is underway. Police are questioning the youths and the vehicle driver as part of the probe.
