Gajapati, June 16: A major road accident was averted in Odisha's Gajapati district after two passenger buses collided head-on near Mentiamba under R. Udayagiri police station limits on Tuesday. While three passengers sustained serious injuries, more than 50 others escaped with minor or no injuries.
According to reports, the accident occurred when a private bus named Balakumari, travelling from the Chikiti area of Ganjam district, collided head-on with another private bus, Giridhari, which was coming from Rayagada in the opposite direction.
The impact of the collision left three passengers critically injured, triggering panic among those travelling in both buses. Local residents and fellow passengers immediately rushed to assist the injured and informed emergency services.
The seriously injured passengers were rescued and shifted to Chandragiri Medical Centre for treatment. Their condition is reported to be under medical observation.
More than 50 passengers travelling in the two buses had a narrow escape, as the accident could have resulted in a far greater tragedy. The collision caused significant damage to the front portions of both vehicles.
Upon receiving information, police personnel reached the spot and initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident. Efforts are underway to ascertain whether overspeeding, negligence or road conditions contributed to the mishap.
The incident once again highlights concerns over road safety on the busy routes connecting southern Odisha districts, where passenger buses frequently operate through hilly and winding roads.
