New Delhi, December 1: Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury sparked a row on Monday after she arrived at Parliament with a rescued stray dog in her car, leading to accusations from ruling party members that she was indulging in theatrics.
Chowdhury explained that she had found the stray earlier in the day and was on her way to a veterinarian. Responding to the controversy, she expressed surprise at the objections raised by members of the ruling party, questioning the lack of any law against rescuing an animal.
"This government does not like animals," Chowdhury said, adding, "Animals don't have a voice. The dog was in the car, so what's the problem? It's so small—does it look like it would bite? Those sitting inside Parliament bite, not the dogs," she remarked when asked about the dog in her vehicle.
The MP, a known animal lover who has pets at home, further emphasized that there was no legal barrier to rescuing a stray dog, challenging the criticism from her political opponents.
According to sources, Chowdhury's driver was supposed to take the dog to the veterinarian after dropping her off at Parliament.
However, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal accused the Congress leader of creating a spectacle, labeling the incident a "tamasha" (theatrics) and accusing her of breaching parliamentary protocol. Pal claimed that no one could bring animals into Parliament without proper documentation and called for action against Chowdhury.
"She is not taking parliamentary debates seriously. Instead of addressing public issues, she's turning Parliament into a joke with such antics," Pal said, demanding that the Speaker take appropriate action.
The BJP MP also stressed that bringing animals, including dogs, onto Parliament grounds is not allowed.
