Tesla Expands India Presence with New Delhi Showroom
Electric vehicle giant Tesla is continuing its expansion into the Indian market, announcing the opening of its second showroom in the country. The new "Tesla Experience Centre" will launch in New Delhi's Aerocity on August 11, marking another significant step in the company's strategy to establish a physical presence in key Indian metros.
Premium Retail Strategy
The Delhi showroom, located in the Worldmark 3 building, follows the successful launch of Tesla's first Indian showroom in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex on July 15. This deliberate, city-by-city rollout focuses on creating premium brand experiences in high-traffic, affluent areas, signaling a focus on the luxury end of the market.
The Model Y: A Premium Offering
Currently, Tesla is offering only one model in India: the Model Y electric SUV. The vehicle is priced at a significant premium compared to international markets, with the standard rear-wheel-drive variant starting at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). This high cost is largely due to India's substantial import duties on fully built vehicles.
Despite the price, the Model Y boasts impressive specifications. The standard model offers a range of up to 500 km, while the Long Range version extends that to 622 km. It also features high-end technology, including a minimalist interior dominated by a 15.4-inch touchscreen, advanced driver-assistance features supported by eight external cameras, and luxurious cabin materials. The car is available in six colors, but only Stealth Grey is included in the standard price. The other five shades—Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quicksilver, and Ultra Red—cost extra, up to Rs 1.85 lakh.
With its second showroom, Tesla is solidifying its entry into India, betting that its brand appeal and advanced technology will attract buyers, even with the challenges posed by high import costs.
