Thane, Aug 28: A 38-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Maharashtra’s Thane district after learning that her bank account had been linked to multiple cyber fraud cases across different states, police said.

The deceased was identified as Devika Armugam Pandaram, a resident of Sairam Society in Dombivli East.

According to police, officials from the Churu Cyber Cell in Rajasthan visited her residence on August 8 and served her a notice to appear for questioning in connection with a case registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Her Bank of Maharashtra account was allegedly used in an online fraud case.

Seeking clarification, Pandaram approached the Cyber Crime Department at the Thane Police Commissionerate. Police said she was informed that cyber fraud cases had reportedly been registered against her in several states, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

Her relatives told police that she became extremely anxious after learning that she might have to travel to different states to face questioning.

Police said she was found seriously injured at her home on Tuesday afternoon. Her relatives rushed her to a private hospital, from where she was referred to Shastri Nagar Hospital, a civic-run facility. Doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Police have registered a case of accidental death and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the alleged misuse of her bank account.
