Expect intense heat followed by sudden thunderstorms across various districts

Odisha residents should prepare for a significant shift in climatic conditions over the coming week. According to the latest data from the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the state is currently experiencing a mix of dense fog and rising daytime temperatures, with a more volatile weather pattern expected to emerge shortly.

Current Temperature Extremes and Foggy Mornings

Recent observations show a sharp contrast in local conditions. Jharsuguda recorded the highest maximum temperature at 39.6°C, while Phulbani saw the lowest minimum at 14.5°C. Early morning commuters have faced visibility challenges, particularly in Chandbali, where "very dense fog" reduced visibility to below 50 meters. Bhubaneswar also reported shallow fog, affecting the capital city’s early hours.

Imminent Rise in Day Temperatures

While the weather has remained dry across most districts today, a warming trend is on the horizon. For the next three days, no major changes in the maximum temperature are expected. However, a gradual increase of 2-3°C is predicted thereafter. This shift will likely push several regions into a more uncomfortable heat bracket as mid-March approaches.

Thunderstorm and Lightning Alerts Issued

Stability will give way to atmospheric turbulence starting March 7. Yellow warnings have been issued for several districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak. These areas should anticipate isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. Additionally, gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30-50 kmph are forecast for Day 3 and Day 4, specifically impacting the northern and coastal belts.

Hot and Humid Conditions for Coastal Belts

Before the rain arrives, coastal districts like Puri, Khordha, and Ganjam will grapple with hot and humid weather. The IMD has marked these regions under a "Watch" category, advising residents to take necessary precautions against heat exhaustion. This "Hot and Humid" warning remains active for the next 48 hours, particularly for the southern and eastern pockets of the state.
