Celebrating women power with a unique festive twist

The holiday spirit has officially arrived in West Bengal with a spectacular display of tradition and progressive values at the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Taratala. Recognized as one of the largest pre-Christmas gatherings in the region, this year’s Cake Mixing Ceremony IHM Kolkata stood out by dedicating the festivities to the "Pink Force of Society," a tribute to the invaluable contributions women make to the world.

The atmosphere at the campus was electric as the event broke away from centuries-old customs to introduce a refreshing new icon: the "Lady Santa." This symbolic change was met with thunderous applause, serving as a powerful reminder that the spirit of giving, leadership, and care is not limited by gender. The Lady Santa represented the nurturing and leadership roles that women undertake daily in their homes and professions.

At the heart of the celebration was the massive mixing ritual. A diverse group of accomplished women—ranging from doctors and police officers to educators and media professionals—gathered around the mixing table. Together, they blended tons of aromatic spices, premium dried fruits, and festive spirits, symbolizing a unified front of female empowerment.

The visual grandeur of the event was matched by its ceremonial significance. Smt. Nandini Chakravorty, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Home & Hill Affairs, and Tourism), graced the occasion to light the towering Christmas tree. This illumination marked the formal commencement of the festive season for the institute.

Adding a local cultural flavor to the western tradition, the student choir performed a unique Bengali Christmas carol. This unexpected musical treat resonated deeply with the audience, offering a blend of heritage and holiday cheer. The event was entirely managed by the hospitality students, showcasing their skills in logistics, décor, and guest relations.

The celebration also extended a warm welcome to the younger generation. Students from various city schools were invited to participate in cookie and muffin decorating workshops. Their enthusiasm added a layer of innocent joy to the day, strengthening the bond between the hospitality institute and local educational bodies.

Culinary excellence was on full display as IHM’s budding chefs presented a lavish spread of confectionery. Guests were treated to an array of delicacies, including roasted pumpkin-spiced mousse, matcha pastries, and vibrant berry pies.

Reflecting on the massive success of the day, Principal Raja Sadhukhan expressed his pride in the students. He noted that the event was a perfect reflection of hospitality and unity, made even more special by the participation of women achievers from all walks of life.
