Chilly winds and thick fog grip Odisha this winter season.

Residents across Odisha are waking up to a blanket of thick fog and a noticeable chill as winter tightens its grip. According to the latest data from theMeteorological Centre Bhubaneswar, several regions are currently experiencing a significant drop in mercury, with G. Udayagiri recording the lowest temperature in the state at a freezing5.6°C.

Fog Alerts for 12 Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a specific Odisha weather update regarding visibility. Over the next two days, shallow to moderate fog is expected to persist during the early morning hours. This weather pattern will primarily affect isolated pockets within 12 specific districts:

  • Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur
  • Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore
  • Bhadrak, Angul, and Deogarh
  • Koraput, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi

Temperature Trends Across the State

While the hills are shivering, the plains are also feeling the bite of winter. Phulbani recorded a minimum temperature of 7.0°C, making it one of the coldest spots in the interior regions. Meanwhile, the capital city, Bhubaneswar, saw a high of 27.8°C and a low of 15.1°C, while Cuttack remained slightly cooler with a minimum of 12.6°C.

Interestingly, Paralakhemundi recorded the highest maximum temperature at29.0°C, showing a stark contrast between the daytime sun and the nighttime chill.

Seven-Day Outlook

Looking ahead, the IMD predicts that there will be no large changes in the minimum (nighttime) temperatures over the next seven days. While the dry weather is expected to continue across all districts, the presence of "Very Dense Fog" in places like Rourkela—where visibility has dropped below 50 meters—remains a concern for commuters and early morning travelers.

Drivers are advised to use fog lights and maintain a safe distance on highways, especially in the identified northern and interior districts where visibility is most compromised.
