Mumbai, July 4: Thirteen years ago, Team India lifted the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 at Wankhede Stadium, here beating Sri Lanka in a tensed final. The victory lap after that triumphant match continues to be one of the glorious and historic moments of Indian cricket.
Apart from several heroic contributions by Indian players in that tournament, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni played an attacking unbeaten 91-run innings in the final to script a memorable victory. He hit a huge six as India achieved the target and won the title.
The players took a memorable victory lap at Wankhede and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar announced his ODI retirement with the World Cup win.
For the Master Blaster Tendulkar, it was his only World Cup trophy in two decades long illustrious career. The Indian players were too emotional on that occasion. Virat Kohli and Yusuf Pathan carried Tendulkar on their shoulders for his years-long contributions to Indian cricket.
Thirteen years after, on Thursday, Wankhede is all geared up for another World Cup victory lap. Though the summit clash was played in Bridgetwon (Barbados), but the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is ready for another memorable moment with the new world champions. Not to forget the BCCI headquarter is in Mumbai too.
Since this is a special occasion and a historic moment, so the MCA has allowed free entry for fans at Wankhede Stadium for India's the victory parade on Thursday evening.
Special security arrangements and traffic guidelines have been issued by Mumbai Police for the victory parade.
India captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube are local players in Maharashtra and the crowd is expected to be ecstatic to receive the World CUP champions at the Wankhede after 13 long years of wait, it is expected.
