Bhubaneswar, March 7: Renowned journalist, writer, and translator Suvash Satapathy will receive the prestigious the Kendra Sahitya Akademi for its annual Translation Prize for 2024. The announcement was made on Friday.
This esteemed recognition acknowledges his exceptional contribution to literature through his translation of renowned author Ruskin Bond's autobiography Lone Fox Dancing into Odia, titled Kokishialira Ekaka Nrutya.
The award includes a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, a citation, and a plaque, emphasizing the importance of his translation work. The decision was made by an independent jury selected by the Akademi.
The panel of judges for the Odia translation category this year included poet Amaresh Pattnaik, along with distinguished literary figures Pravasini Mahakud and Monalisa Jena.
Satapathy, a well-respected name in the Odia literary world, has an impressive body of translated works. His portfolio includes the English translation of the biography of prominent Odia politician Harekrushna Mahtab, a biography of Nityananda Kanungo, and a book focused on Odia nationalism.
Satapathy, who completed his postgraduate studies in English at Utkal University in 1983, was previously honored with the Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014. Some of his notable translations include Samsmar, Purnima Ratrira Abhisara and Anyanya Galpa, Samudra Kulara Gaon, and translations of short story collections by Khushwant Singh, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, Ashoka Mitran, and more.
He has also translated four volumes of the Complete Works of B.R. Ambedkar.
