New Delhi, July 26: The Supreme Court will hear Justice Yashwant Varma’s plea on July 28, challenging the in-house committee's report and former CJI Sanjiv Khanna's recommendation for his impeachment. Varma claims he wasn’t given a fair chance to respond before the panel concluded its findings.
The case stems from a March 14 incident when cash was allegedly found at his Delhi residence during a fire. Justice Varma, then a Delhi High Court judge, denies any involvement and says the money was not his or his family's.
In his petition, he argues the committee acted with bias, reversed the burden of proof, and made adverse findings without concrete evidence. He calls the recommendation sent to the President and Prime Minister on May 8 “unconstitutional,” saying it bypasses the Judges (Inquiry) Act and undermines Parliament’s exclusive power to remove judges.
Justice Varma also alleges denial of access to evidence, absence during key witness examinations, and violation of natural justice. He seeks to quash the committee’s May 3 report and all related actions.
