New Delhi, September 30: The Supreme Court of India has directed IIT Dhanbad to admit Atul Kumar, a Dalit youth, to the BTech course after he missed the fee payment deadline.
The court used its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to ensure that Kumar, who belongs to a marginalized group, is not deprived of his opportunity due to financial constraints.
Atul Kumar, the son of a daily wager from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, had secured a seat at IIT Dhanbad but was unable to pay the admission fee of Rs 17,500 before the deadline.
Despite his efforts to arrange the money and upload the necessary documents, he missed the cut-off time by a narrow margin.
The Supreme Court emphasized that a talented student like Kumar should not be left out and directed that he be admitted to the same batch he would have joined if the fee had been paid on time
