New Delhi, Aug 09: The Supreme Court granted bail on Friday to AAP leader Manish Sisodia in connection with the corruption and money laundering cases related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, after noting that he had been in custody for 17 months.
A bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan observed that Sisodia’s prolonged custody, without the commencement of trial, had deprived him of his right to a speedy trial.
The bench emphasized that it would be a travesty of justice to require him to seek bail from the trial court at this stage.
The Supreme Court stressed the importance of upholding the principle that bail is the norm, and incarceration should be the exception, urging trial courts and high courts to recognize this.
The court ordered Sisodia's release on bail, requiring him to furnish a personal bond of Rs 10 lakh and two sureties of the same amount.
Sisodia, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, was initially arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26, 2023, for alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22. Subsequently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested him on March 9, 2023, in connection with a money laundering case related to the CBI's FIR.
