Nanded, August 13: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was injured in a knife attack at a gurdwara in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Thursday, police said.

According to Nanded Superintendent of Police Neelabh Rohan, a Nihang Sikh attacked Badal with a kirpan, a traditional curved dagger, inside the gurdwara. The accused was immediately taken into custody, the police officer said.

Badal was injured in the attack and was subsequently hospitalised. A video circulating on social media showed him walking inside a building with a cloth wrapped around his right hand.

Earlier in the day, Badal had visited Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded along with his wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, an Akali Dal MP.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
