Bhubaneswar, Sept 3: With onion prices soaring in the open market, consumers in Bhubaneswar got a major relief as the Centre launched the sale of onions at a subsidised price of ₹35 per kg.
The initiative has drawn a huge crowd, with people turning up in large numbers to purchase the subsidised onions. Visuals from the spot showed consumers carrying away onions in large quantities amid heavy rush.
According to reports, onions are currently being sold for around ₹60 per kg in the open market, putting additional pressure on household budgets. Against this backdrop, the subsidised onion sale has come as a relief for consumers.
The National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation (NCCF), a central government organisation, today launched the subsidised onion distribution programme in Bhubaneswar under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
The move aims to make onions available to consumers at a lower price amid the rise in retail rates. The sharp difference between the open-market price and the subsidised rate has attracted significant public interest, with long queues and crowds witnessed at the sale points.
