Bhubaneswar, Jan 2: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a complete ban on obscene dance performances at Jatra shows during the Khandagiri Mela 2026, underscoring its commitment to uphold the religious and cultural sanctity of the annual festival.

The Khandagiri Mela is scheduled to take place from January 25 to February 7, 2026.

The decision follows complaints from members of the public who alleged that vulgar dance acts at certain Jatra performances were undermining the fair’s traditional character and causing discomfort to family audiences. The BMC has made it clear that no indecent or obscene content will be permitted during Jatra shows at the mela.

According to BMC Mayor Sulochana Das, Jatra performances will be held in seven designated pandals, and organisers will be strictly instructed to comply with the ban on obscene content.

The announcement came after a preparatory meeting chaired by BMC Mayor. The meeting was attended by corporators, standing committee members, representatives of the Jatra committee, and officials from different departments.

The BMC noted that a similar restriction was enforced during last year’s Khandagiri Mela following public objections and reiterated that the ban will be strictly implemented again this year to preserve the fair’s traditional and religious essence.

Discussions in the meeting also focused on ensuring discipline, visitor safety, and the smooth conduct of the fair.

To strengthen security, around 100 CCTV cameras will be installed throughout the mela premises, along with the deployment of additional police personnel to prevent theft and maintain law and order. A 24-hour control room will also be set up by the BMC, with officials from all relevant departments stationed there to manage coordination and respond to emergencies.

Arrangements discussed during the meeting included the procession of deities, stall allotment, and crowd management. Special facilities such as toilets, drinking water, proper lighting, and security will be provided for Naga sadhus and devotees. The BMC will also ensure the availability of health services, mobile toilets, and additional drinking water during the mela period.
