Bhubaneswar, Oct 23: The well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and along the Tamil Nadu coast is unlikely to intensify into a depression, according to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area by Thursday, the department said.

Earlier, the IMD had predicted that the system might strengthen into a depression. However, the latest observations indicate that it has weakened instead of intensifying. The system is now moving west-northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh, where it is likely to lose strength further.

Under its influence, several parts of Odisha have experienced light to moderate rainfall over the past 24 hours. Notable rainfall figures include 60 mm each in Khordha, Balangir (Saitala), and Nayagarh (Odagaon); 40 mm in Kandhamal (Kalinga) and Khordha (Tangi); 30 mm in Kalahandi (Lanjigarh) and Rayagada (Ambadola); and 20 mm each in Nayagarh (Ranpur), Balangir (Titilagarh, Gudvela), and Khordha (Chilika).

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder in parts of coastal and southern Odisha on Thursday. Districts likely to be affected include Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur, the weather office said.
