Sambalpur, Jan 21: A student was found dead at the Brahmaputra Hostel of Sambalpur University on Tuesday. The body was recovered by Burla police from the hostel premises in a hanging condition.

The deceased has been identified as Suraj Kujur, a second-year student of the Department of Economics at Sambalpur University. He was a resident of Kutra in Sundargarh district and was staying alone in Room No. 52 of the hostel.

Following the incident, Burla police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Senior university officials, including the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar, also visited the hostel and reviewed the situation.

According to sources, Suraj was scheduled to appear for the final paper of the ongoing semester, Health Economics, on Tuesday. On the same day, his classmates knocked on his room door in the afternoon to call him for lunch, but there was no response. Assuming he might be resting, they left. Later in the night, some students again knocked on the door to call him for dinner, but received no response.

Growing suspicious, a few students looked through the window of the room and found him hanging inside. They immediately informed the hostel authorities, who then alerted the police.

Police have stated that the exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained, and further investigation is underway.
