The 2024 Paris Olympic Games began with a spectacular and unprecedented opening ceremony, featuring a unique Parade of Nations that floated down the Seine River. This first-of-its-kind event saw over 6,800 athletes from around the world travelling on 90 boats along a six-kilometre route, starting from the bridge near Jardin des Plantes and passing through iconic Parisian landmarks, concluding at the Trocadero.
The Indian contingent, consisting of 78 athletes, was the 84th nation in the parade. Leading the group were two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and four-time Olympian Sharath Kamal, who proudly carried the Indian flag. Sharing their boat with athletes from Iran and Indonesia, the duo expressed their pride and excitement at the honour.
PV Sindhu, participating in her third Olympic Games, spoke about the significance of the moment. "It’s a one-time opportunity and a proud moment for both of us," she said, referring to her fellow flag bearer Sharath Kamal. "I’ve known Sharath for a long time, and it feels really nice to be beside him as co-flagbearer. I want him to do well and enjoy the experience. He’s come so far in his journey," Sindhu shared with Olympics.com.
Sharath Kamal, a veteran in table tennis, also reflected on the overwhelming emotions of the occasion. "People have been congratulating me in the last few days. It has been very overwhelming, and it is going to be a big day for all of us," he said.
The Indian male athletes showcased their cultural heritage by wearing traditional kurta bundi sets, while the female athletes were elegantly dressed in sarees.
The parade concluded with the hoisting of the Olympic flag, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic torch, marking the official start of the 2024 Games.
