India secures unprecedented double medal win in para athletics

India achieved an extraordinary milestone in para athletics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday. Soman Rana secured gold with a 13.40m throw, while Shubham Juyal claimed silver with a 13.28m effort in the men's F57 shot put final. Para-sports have steadily gained prominence across India following exceptional performances at recent global events. This victory represents India's first-ever gold and maiden double podium finish in this specific discipline.

Overcoming Extreme Tragedy

Soman Rana reached his 43-year-old career peak after pushing past immense personal hardship. He was once a top amateur boxer who placed fifth at the 2005 National Championships. His life changed drastically in December 2006. Serving with the Gorkha Rifles along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, he lost his leg in a landmine explosion. While recovering at Pune's Artificial Limb Centre, he discovered para athletics. He joined the Army Paralympic Node in 2017. His impressive career includes participating in the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympics. He also won silver at the 2022 Asian Para Games and bronze at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships.

Rebuilding Dreams Through Sports

Shubham Juyal shares an equally inspiring background. The Roorkee native wanted to become an Army officer like his father. He even passed the written exam for the Army Cadet College entry scheme in 2022. That same year, a severe motorcycle crash led to his leg amputation. Instead of typical vocational rehabilitation at the Artificial Limb Centre, he chose para sports. Training under coach Rakesh Singh Rawat at the Army Paralympic Node helped him excel. Before his Glasgow success, he placed seventh at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships and secured medals at the Khelo India Para Games.

Both medalists receive crucial support from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). This program provides financial aid for international competitions, equipment, and national training camps. Their success in Glasgow highlights India's expanding talent pool in global sports.
