Bhubaneswar, Sept 24: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has slapped a hefty penalty of Rs 11.22 lakh on the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR) in Odisha’s Sambalpur district for pitfalls in managing its solid wastes.
The CPCB has imposed the hefty amount of fine following a field-level inspection with a bad note on the shabby management of the biomedical wastes.
As per an order issued by the Central environmental body, a team from the CPCB visited VIMSAR and found several discrepancies in its waste management practices. The team observed breaching of almost all the SOPs and waste management standard laid down by the authorities.
Following this, the board had issued a notice directing VIMSAR to improve its waste management systems, but in vain.Despite the warning it had failed to comply with the standard operation procedures of the government.
The board in its instruction, has warned further stringent actions as per the the National Green Tribunal’s guidelines if the institutin fails to pay the fine within 15 days.
