Storm intensifies, moving towards Tamil Nadu and Andhra coasts

A major weather development has been flagged by the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar. According to the latest observations made on November 27, 2025, the weather patterns in the southwest Bay of Bengal are shifting rapidly.

Current Status of the System

A Deep Depression, which has been hovering over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lankan coast, is gaining momentum. Over the last six hours, this system has tracked north-northwestwards at a speed of approximately 17 kmph.

As of 08:30 hrs IST today, the system was located near latitude 6.7°N and longitude 82.1°E. To put this into perspective for residents on the mainland, the center of this depression is positioned about 640 km south-southeast of Puducherry and roughly 730 km away from Chennai. It currently sits 120 km from Batticaloa and 130 km from Hambantota in Sri Lanka.

Forecast: Intensification into a Cyclonic Storm

The immediate forecast suggests a rapid escalation in intensity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that this Deep Depression will continue its current trajectory across the southwest Bay of Bengal. The critical update is that within the next three hours, the system is very likely to strengthen further, transforming into a full-fledged cyclonic storm.

Projected Path and Impact

Looking ahead at the next 48 hours, the system is expected to maintain its north-northwestward movement. It will traverse the waters of the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lanka coast. The projected path places the storm on a course toward the coasts of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the adjoining areas of South Andhra Pradesh.

Residents in these coastal belts are advised to stay updated with local warnings as the system approaches. While the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar is monitoring the situation, the primary impact zones appear to be further south along the eastern coast.
