Bone-Chilling Cold Grips Several Districts Across Coastal and Interior Odisha

Winter has tightened its grip across Odisha, with several regions experiencing a significant drop in temperatures. According to the latest data from the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar dated January 8, 2026, the state is currently witnessing a mix of bone-chilling cold waves and moderate fog conditions.

The hill station of G. Udayagiri has emerged as the coldest spot in the state, recording a freezing minimum temperature of 2.5°C. This intense chill isn't limited to the hills; Phulbani in the plains also saw the mercury plummet to 5.0°C. Meanwhile, Jharsuguda stood at the other end of the spectrum, recording the state's highest maximum temperature at 29.7°C.

Cold Wave and Fog Alerts

The weather department has confirmed that cold wave conditions are prevailing in isolated pockets. Residents in the following districts should take extra precautions:

  • Angul
  • Jagatsinghpur
  • Khordha
  • Jharsuguda

In addition to the falling temperatures, moderate fog has been reported in Bhawanipatna and Phulbani, where visibility has dropped to between 200 and 500 meters. This has prompted caution for early morning commuters and drivers on the highways.

Weather in Twin Cities

The capital city, Bhubaneswar, and its neighbor, Cuttack, are also feeling the winter sting. Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum of 9.4°C, which is 5.6 degrees below the normal temperature for this time of year. Cuttack followed closely with a minimum of 9.6°C. Both cities enjoyed dry weather with no rainfall reported.

Across the rest of the state, dry weather continues to prevail. Other notable minimum temperatures include Sundergarh at 8°C, Keonjhar at 8°C, and Bolangir at 9°C. With the departure from normal temperatures reaching significant levels in districts like Khordha and Angul, the winter of 2026 is proving to be particularly harsh for the people of Odisha.
