Sambalpur, March 11: Efforts have begun to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Sarasatia, a traditional delicacy of Sambalpur with a history of more than 200 years. The district administration has initiated the process to obtain official recognition for the unique food item.
Sambalpur Collector Siddheshwar Baliram Bondar said that an application has been submitted after compiling reports on the delicacy’s geographical origin, uniqueness, history, preparation process, and health-related aspects. Preliminary documentation highlighting its distinctive characteristics has already been completed.
Officials have also collected data related to the food’s quality and nutritional value. After verification by the Central Government, Sarasatia may soon receive the GI tag, the Collector said.
Sarasatia is prepared using natural methods from the branch of a particular tree, which allows the food item to be preserved for a longer period. Authorities believe that the GI recognition will help promote the traditional delicacy and preserve its heritage.
The initiative gained momentum after Union Education Minister and Sambalpur MP Dharmendra Pradhan directed the district administration to take steps to secure GI recognition for the product.
The delicacy has been traditionally prepared by the family of Prabhulal Gupta at Kunjelpada Chowk in Sambalpur city for over two centuries. The family claims the preparation of Sarasatia dates back to 1866.
