Bhubaneswar, April 11: Nutri-rich millet 'Shree Prava' developed by Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has received national recognition.
It belongs to finger millet variety and its code name is OUAT Kalinga Finger Millet – II.
It has been accorded national recognition by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and not it can be cultivated in any part of the country, said OUAT vice-chancellor Prof Pravat Kumar Roul. The OUAT had released the Shree Prava finger millet in 2023.
Finger millet, one of the minor cereals, is known for several health benefits. It is an important staple food in India and is popular for high content of calcium (0.38%), dietary fiber (18%) and phenolic compounds (0.3–3%).
It's also known for anti-diabetic, anti-tumerogenic, atherosclerogenic effects, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
