Mayurbhanj, Feb 2: Senior Congress leader and former Mayurbhanj MP, Sushila Tiriya, passed away today at the age of 70. Tiriya had been battling health complications for several days and was undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, where she breathed her last this evening.

Tiriya had a distinguished political career, having been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Odisha in 1986. She also served two terms as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mayurbhanj in 1994 and 1996. In addition to her legislative work, she was a prominent member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body.

The demise of Tiriya has been deeply mourned by fellow Congress leaders. Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Bhakta Charan Das expressed his sadness, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Sushila Tiriya, former MP and ex-CWC member. Her commitment to the tribal welfare and social justice will be remembered.”

Party leader Navajyoti Patnaik also paid tribute, saying, “The demise of Tiriya, a dedicated social worker and a senior Congress leader, has created a void in the politics of North Odisha. She lived her life in the service of the people. Her contribution to the development of Mayurbhanj region and her strong voice for Tribal rights will always be remembered.”

Tiriya’s legacy in advocating for tribal rights and her significant contributions to the development of the Mayurbhanj region will continue to inspire many.
