Cuttack, Jan 8: Scores of cancer patients are spending shivering nights under the open rest shed on the premises of Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC) in Cuttack for the last 10 to 15 days waiting for treatment.
The 281-bed government-run cancer hospital gets 700 to 1,000 patients daily for radiation, diagnosis and treatment.
It is taking around 10 to 15 days before treatment for diagnosis and report collection. Due to nonavailability of amenities, around 70 patients and their attendants are forced to wait under the open shed on the hospital premises.
Many of them stay in the open for at least five to seven days till availability of their diagnosis reports.
The attending doctors are saying there is no bed in the ward. You will be called on your turn for chemotherapy and radiation. We can't do anything. You may take shelter in the waiting said, alleged some attendants.
A professor of the hospital said it is taking time to get diagnosis and report after consulting doctors at the outdoor following which patients and attendants are waiting for days.
