New Delhi, May 19: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a plea challenging the arrest of Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad by Haryana police over his social media remarks on Operation Sindoor.
The comments allegedly insulted women officers and promoted communal discord.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal told CJI B R Gavai that the professor’s remarks were patriotic. While the court agreed to hear the plea soon, the date is yet to be fixed.
Two FIRs have been filed against Mahmudabad in Sonipat based on complaints by Haryana Women’s Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia and BJP Yuva Morcha leader Yogesh Jatheri. The charges include promoting enmity, harming national integrity, and insulting women’s modesty under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Ashoka University stated it is gathering details and will cooperate with authorities. The NCW earlier issued a notice, alleging Mahmudabad tried to vilify military operations.
Mahmudabad maintains his comments were misunderstood and outside the Commission’s jurisdiction.
